John B. Crowther

A native of New Haven, Connecticut, Mr. Crowther has been in practice in Volusia County since 1974, concentrating on the more human aspects of the law, including estate planning, wills and trusts, probate, real estate, commercial law and elder law.

A 1963 graduate of the Hopkins School (Founded in 1660), New Haven, Connecticut, Mr. Crowther is also a graduate of Stetson University, DeLand, Florida, having received three degrees from that institution: Batchelor of Arts (History), as a Distinguished Military Graduate, 1967; Master of Arts (Social Studies), as a Federal Prospective Teacher Fellow, 1969; and Juris Doctor (Law), 1974. He is a member of Phi Alpha Theta (History honorary); Phi Alpha Delta (Law fraternity), where he served as Justice and Treasurer, Brewer Chapter, Stetson College of Law; Pershing Rifles (Military honorary); Scabbard and Blade (Military honorary); and Sigma Phi Epsilon (Social fraternity), Stetson University.

Prior to entering practice, Mr. Crowther taught school, coached, and served as a Captain in the United States Army and Army Reserves, Military Police Corps, with overseas service in Korea (1971), where he was decorated with the Army Commendation Medal for his highly meritorious service. He was the recipient of the Florida Jaycees’ “State of Florida Good Government Award” in 1978, and was listed among the Outstanding Young Men of America in 1979 and 1980.

Mr. Crowther is a member of the Florida Bar (Real Property, Probate and Trust Law and Elder Law Sections), where he was admitted to practice in 1974. He was admitted to practice before the U. S. District Court, Middle District of Florida, and the U. S. Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit in 1976. He has received the highest possible peer rating from the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory (AV “Preeminent”, 5.0 of 5.0), which first began its rating of lawyers in 1868, and was named as one of “Orlando’s Top Lawyers” in October 2012.

Active in the local community, he has served as both the Chairman of the City Council and as the Mayor of Orange City, Florida, and has twice served on its Charter Review Commission (1976 and 2010). He has also served as the Secretary of the Volusia County League of Municipalities, as a member of the Board of Directors of the DeBary Chamber of Commerce, the Deltona Area Chamber of Commerce (where he also served as Board Attorney), the DeLand Cultural Arts Center, the Boys and Girls Club of Volusia County, Inc. (where he served as both the Organizing Attorney and Board Attorney), the African American Museum of the Arts (where he also served as the Board Attorney), the Volusia County Bar/Judiciary/Clerk Committee, the Volusia County Probate and Guardianship Subcommittee, the Southwest Volusia Habitat for Humanity (Life Member), and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (Life Member), Post 8093, DeBary, Florida.

As a 7th degree black belt (Nanadan) in Isshinryu karate, Mr. Crowther actively trains and instructs in his Orange City dojo (martial arts school). In 1999, he was recognized by the American Okinawan Karate Association as its “Black Belt of the Year”; and in 2000, was a finalist for its “Instructor of the Year” award.

He is married (1965) to the former Margaret Louise Smith of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and together they have three children, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A native of Orange City, Florida, Mr. Crowther has been in practice in Volusia County since 2004.

Prior to joining the practice, Mr. Crowther served as a judicial clerk and staff attorney for the Probate, Guardianship and Trust Division of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit in Tampa, Florida, and as Deputy Court Counsel for Chief Judge Dennis Alvarez, of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit. While attending Stetson University College of Law, Mr. Crowther served as a judicial clerk to the Honorable Elizabeth A. Kovachevich, U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida (Tampa Division).

Mr. Crowther concentrates his practice in the areas of estate planning, wills and trusts, probate, real estate, commercial law and elder law. He is a past guest lecturer for the Stetson University College of Law Academic Enrichment Series and is a current member of the Orange City Historical Society and the DeLand Area Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Crowther is a member of the Florida Bar. He was admitted to practice in 1996, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit, the U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida, the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Florida, and the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Florida.

Mr. Crowther is a graduate of Stetson University, having obtained his B.A. in 1992, and J.D, cum laude, in 1996. He is also a graduate of the University of Florida, College of Law, having obtained his LL.M. in Taxation in 1999.
